Bhimbetka Excavations

Major excavations at Bhimbetka were conducted by Vikram University under the guidance of Dr. V. S. Wakankar. Later excavations were carried out by Deccan College, Sagar University and researchers from Switzerland.

Kayatha
Ujjain District, Madhya Pradesh
1966 – 1966
Discovered by Dr. V. S. Wakankar, located about 15 miles north of Ujjain on the banks of the Kalisindh River. Excavated during 1965–66. Antiquities ranged from 4000 to 2400 years before present. Excavations revealed houses with well-defined rooms such as kitchens, toilets, and basins. Findings also included Malwa ware pottery, copper ornaments, iron equipment, and terracotta toys.

Dangwada
Madhya Pradesh, India
1978 – 1979
Discovered by M. D. Khare and Dr. V. S. Wakankar, located about 32 km southwest of Ujjain during 1978–79. Antiquities unearthed belonged to 10 different cultural periods ranging from Kayatha culture to the post-Parmar period. A unique find was a house plinth with a Yajna Kund containing half-burnt samidha, terracotta lamps, a Suryakant Mani (lens used for lighting the Yajna Vedi), ornaments, and pottery.
